Basic Self-Defense Training

Since 1999, Graves Investigations has offered instruction in martial arts to individuals who are seeking to improve their capabilities in self-defense. While the term “martial arts” might typically bring to mind images of highly skilled individuals performing impossible, gravity-defying moves, martial arts can be invaluable tools in just about anyone’s self-defense toolkit. Anyone can be trained in martial arts and learn martial arts techniques that they can use to defend themselves against an attack.

There are many styles of martial arts, ranging from Tae Kwon Do to Kung Fu. While they might look similar to the untrained eye, each style is different. At Graves Investigations, we’re experienced in several of the most effective martial arts for self-defense:  Read on for more information about each. If you feel that being trained in martial arts would better help protect you and your family, please call us for more information about training approaches, dates, and times.

Tae Kuk Mu Sul
Kerry Graves is a Tae Kuk Mu Sul black belt and certified instructor

An ancient warrior art, Korean Tae Kuk Mu Sul is a comprehensive martial art that features soft, circular and easy-flowing movements juxtaposed with straight, hard power movements. Take Kuk Mu Sul uses pressure points, joint manipulation, falling techniques, and other practices to help practitioners cultivate mental and physical strength and defend themselves against attackers.

Muay Thai
Known as the world’s most dangerous striking art, Muay Thai is a stand-up fighting technique not dissimilar from what most people know as boxing:  some people see Muay Thai and call it “kickboxing.” High-speed, powerful Muay Thai punches and kicks, as well as knee and elbow maneuvers, are very effective tools for physical conditioning and self-defense.

Krav Maga
Originally developed for the Israeli military, Krav Maga is a martial art and self-defense system that focuses on neutralizing threats and mounting forceful counter-attacks in real-world situations. Krav Maga teaches awareness of surroundings to avoid threats, psychology of confrontation, and violence avoidance unless it’s inescapable.

Mixed Martial Arts – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Escrima
A common component of most mixed martial arts techniques, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is focused on the basics of ground fighting – if you are attacked and end up on the ground, most other martial arts don’t help you much.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches leverage and limb isolation concepts that are unique and invaluable. Likewise, the Filipino martial art of Escrima also provides a specific set of defenses that other systems don’t:  defending against sticks and knives in close-range street encounters.
