Private Investigation: Missing Persons

Things to Know When Hiring a Private Investigator to Find a Missing Person in North Carolina

Realizing someone you care about is missing can be devastating. Calling the police is a good initial reaction, but hiring a private investigator may mean finding your missing loved one more quickly. If you believe your loved one has been kidnapped or abducted, involving the police should be your first step. If you’re looking for someone who has skipped town or someone you’ve simply lost touch with, the police will most likely be unable to help you and finding a good private investigator will be your best option. There are a few things you should know when hiring an experienced and licensed private investigator to find a missing person.

Your private investigator will need to have access to as much information about the missing person as possible. The more information they have to go on, the easier it will be for them to put the pieces together and get closer to finding your missing loved one. The most important information is the person’s name, date of birth, social security number, and last known address. Supplying more information than this, such as the person’s cell phone number, list of friends or enemies, and favorite places to spend time, may make finding the person even easier. Even if you are only able to supply a name, the private investigator may still be able to find the missing person even though it will likely take longer. The private investigator you hire will compile all of this information and apply their years of experience to finding your loved one.

Private investigators have access to many resources that regular citizens do not, including databases of public records and information and the skills necessary to know how to search them. Combined, these resources and skills can make it possible for a private investigator to locate a missing person in just a day or less if the person isn’t on the run. To find a missing person, a private investigator will likely employ various investigation techniques, including background checks, surveillance, and computer forensics. He or she may also network with other private investigators to see if they’ve heard anything that may be helpful in locating your missing person.

While the phrase “missing persons investigations” may typically bring up stories of kidnapping victims, it can be applied to many other situations. A missing person may be a long lost love, an estranged family member, an old and almost forgotten friend, a dead-beat dad, a runaway teen, or a biological parent. A missing person could also be a person suffering from a mental illness that causes them to forget their home or be afraid of people they should know. Sometimes, though, a missing person is missing because they’ve been the victim of kidnapping, abduction, or, in the worse case imaginable, murder. No matter the reason why your loved one is missing, a private investigator may be able to help you locate them quickly.
